BLOG TOUR – WATCH THE SKIES by Tanith Davenport

Aster had texted Wade. She had written the damn text about fifteen times before finally losing her patience. This was Wade, for fuck’s sake. Whether it was unusual circumstances or not, she had fucked him. She was not about to get all girly and stupid about sending a text message. There was no reason to forget herself just because it was Wade.
But actually writing the text was difficult. She was too used to making exceptions for his ego. Whenever she had texted him before, it had been with the knowledge that he would give her grief over every little thing. Now things had changed, and yet…
In the end, she had kept it brief: We’re going back. Meeting at the layby at 8. See you there.
There. If he decided he wasn’t coming, that was his business. She hadn’t thought he would turn it down, but hell, anything was possible at this point.
It had been about half an hour before he’d responded.
Oh well. Never much of a talker.
Now that it was almost the time, Aster sat on her bed and tried to convince herself she wasn’t nervous. She had no idea how to feel. Would they expect her to have sex with Wade again? Would they expect more of the same, or… what?
Or would they want something else? It had been Hagar’s radio they had been speaking through after all. Would they be expecting something from Hagar?
There was no way of knowing and the thought left a cold chill in her gut. She dropped to her knees and crawled over to the equipment, dragging her rucksack with her. Forcing the fear down, she started to pack, pushing each item down in a rough motion.
A crackle cut through the air and Aster froze. Her spine prickled.
Slowly, very slowly, she turned to look over her shoulder at the CD player on top of the chest of drawers. She never used the radio on it; it wasn’t tuned and the radio switch was set to ‘off’.
It crackled again.
Aster turned on her knees, her eyes fixed on the device. It made a high-pitched whining noise, as if it was tuning itself. She bit her lip.
Then the voice.
Her heart jolted.
“We want. You want. See.”
Oh God. They want me.
Aster shook her head automatically, forcing the thought back. Don’t be stupid. You know what they want. This is the same as last night. They want to see you fuck Wade.
But the new phrase was repeating over and over.
“We want you want we want you want…”
Aster screwed her eyes shut as the words echoed, echoed until she was no longer sure if they were on the radio or inside her head.
Then, quickly, she threw herself across the room and yanked the plug out of the wall. The voice stopped abruptly. Aster dragged herself back to her rucksack and shoved the equipment into it, ignoring the way her hands were shaking. Whatever this was, this was real. This was happening. And there was no point hiding from it.
She had to go back.
